Whether you are going away on a trip or packing away your guns for winter, it is important that you follow proper gun storage advice. You cannot treat your firearms like another piece of furniture that you just toss in the basement. Instead, you must make sure your guns are stored properly for your safety and the longevity of the firearm. Many factors come into play when you are storing your 9mm revolver or Ruger 10/22. When it comes time to put away your guns for a long time, follow these four tips to keep your firearms safe and secure.

Remington Shotguns

Store Your Guns in a Gun Safe

A gun safe is incredibly useful if you will be storing your Remington shotguns, Glock pistols, or other guns long-term. It serves two critical purposes. First, you know your guns are safe and secure. You do not want anybody to have easy access to your firearms except for you. Secondly, a gun safe will help prevent moisture buildup and prevent accidental damage. If your firearms stay in storage for a while, moisture can damage them. Keep them dry by finding an air-tight safe.

Clean the Gun Inside and Out

Before you put away your firearms, you should always do a thorough cleaning. Any leftover residue can cause long-term damage as your guns sit in storage. You should dismantle your gun as much as you can and then clean all the major components. Once everything is clean, apply a layer of lubricant to the exposed metal and let it all dry. Store your Remington 1187 and other long-barrel guns pointed down, so no oil drips down into other parts of the gun.

Add Extra Layers of Protection

There are a few extra precautions you can take to keep your guns moisture-free while in storage. Add a desiccant to your gun safe to prevent rust. This desiccant acts as a dehumidifier and adds an extra layer of protection for long-term storage. If you want to protect your rifle from dings and bumps, you can use a gun sock for a protective covering around your firearm. Make sure to use a silicone-treated gun sock to prevent any moisture buildup.

Keep an Inventory List

For long-term storage, you want to make sure you keep a list of all the guns in the safe and their serial numbers. Write this information down and keep it in a different location. This will give you a record of which firearms are where. You can have peace of mind and a reference for later. After a few months, you do not want to forget which guns you put in storage.
