5 Unique Handguns That Are Simply Too Much Fun to Shoot

There are a number of reasons to buy a semi-automatic pistol. Never let anyone convince you that fun is not one of them. Some handguns are fun due to the caliber they are chambered in. Some are fun because of their uniqueness. Some handguns simply have to be experienced to be appreciated. If you ever get the chance, take any of the following out for a spin.

Kel Tec CP33

A Compact, Low-Recoil Kahr PM9

For compact and subcompact pistols, the reduction in size is often offset by an increase in the sharpness of recoil. The Kahr PM9 is a single-stack subcompact pistol weighing in at 20 ounces when loaded with 6+1 9mm cartridges and a slide length narrower than an inch. It does not get much more compact than that. However, the construction of the Kahr PM9 has successfully accomplished a smaller size while also mastering recoil reduction. It is a combination that proves a whole lot of fun on the range.

A Muzzleloading Shotgun Pistol

A double-barrel muzzleloading shotgun pistol is perhaps more fun because of what it is than what it does. As a muzzleloader, you can control the propellant load and thereby control the recoil to some degree. As handy as that is, these mail-order contraptions are so much fun primarily for being 12 gauge double-barrel shotgun pistols. Not exactly an everyday shooter.

An Accurate 22 LR, the Kel Tec CP33

Some gun companies are content to contribute a single innovation to the world of firearms. Kel Tec seems to do so with every firearm they release. A perfect example is the Kel Tec CP33—a quadruple-stacked overlord of plinking that is chambered in 22 LR. The accurate, innovative Kel Tec CP33 comes stock with a threaded barrel and 33+1 capacity. It is like firing range fun was melted down and cast into this firearm.

A Fully Automatic Mac 11

The Mac 11 might be a touch harder to get your hands on than handguns that do not require a Form 3 NFA application. However, you can certainly still often find a full-auto Mac 11 gun, and there are ranges at which you can rent them. The ridiculous fun of the Mac 11 is pretty self-explanatory—32-50 cartridges of 380 ACP or 9mm run through a Hollywood-quiet suppressor in under 2 seconds? It does not get much more fun than that.

The Antique SACM 1935A

The Pistolet automatique modèle 1935A, aka SACM 1935A, is an antique and largely obscure handgun. The fact that it is chambered in the obsolete (but still available) 765mm Longue cartridge probably contributes to that obscurity. However, the SACM 1935A is also a sleek, elegant, and beautiful masterpiece of ergonomics. In fact, its design was purchased as the template for the legendary SIG P210. That lineage certainly shines in the shooting, and the SACM 1935A is simply a pleasure to run.
