If you want to get into long-range shooting, there are certain things you need to help with your accuracy. The right guns and gear are vital to making a long shot with a rifle. Here are some of the things you will need to make an accurate shot from long distances.

Start with an MOA Rifle

You will need to start with a rifle that is manufactured to shoot MOA. Minute of Angle is a unit of measurement that determines accuracy. It is about 1 inch at 100 yards, 2 inches at 200 yards, and so on. At 1,000 yards, this means the gun should reliably shoot 10-inch groups. The gun is also likely heavy to help stabilize the rifle and mitigate recoil. A custom stock is essential for cheek weld, and you will want a good, crisp trigger.

Choosing the Right Ammo

The right ammo can make all the difference. Common long-range ammo types include 6mm Creedmore, 308 Winchester, and 243. There are others, as well, so do your research on which is best for exactly how you plan to use your long-range rifle. It is also important to know that grain count matters. For example, if you are using a 243 rifle, you will want ammo with at least 87 grains. You might even want 105 or 107.

Long-Range Scopes

Chances are very low that you will be using iron sights if you are going to be shooting at long range. You will need a good scope with minimal distortion. It needs a ballistic turret, allowing you to sight the gun in and set a zero. The reticle should have horizontal hash marks to help account for wind and vertical hash marks for elevation if you ever need them instead of dialing.

Rangefinder

A rangefinder is essential in long-range shooting. You need to know the exact distance from your gun to your target, and a rangefinder can tell you that number. This allows you to dial in adjustments on your scope. Be warned that some models are made for bowhunters and cannot read targets as far as you want to shoot.

Solid Rests for Stabilizing

Accuracy means keeping your rifle as stable as possible. No matter if you are prone or on a bench, you will need a stable rest. You can use a bipod on the front of the rifle and a sandbag or backpack.

Use an App

Finally, you can use a ballistic app on your phone. Instead of keeping detailed logbooks, this app essentially does all the math for you. You can plug in your rifle’s specifics, and it will give you a chart showing everything you need to know. Some apps allow you to save specific gun and ammo combinations or weather and atmospheric conditions. All of these combine to help you shoot more accurately.
