6 Things to Look for When Choosing a Gun Safe

Finding the right gun safe can be a bit more challenging than you might think. You want to have enough space for your guns while also keeping space available for other items, such as ammo or accessories. You want to make sure it is not easy for anyone to quickly grab and carry away, but you want it to be easy to access in an emergency. It should certainly be able to withstand a house fire. Clearly, there are plenty of factors to consider when buying a gun safe. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind before making a purchase.

Safe Construction

There are several factors you should pay attention to when it comes to construction. How thick are the walls? How is the door constructed? Can the door be flexed by hand? It should be made of 10- or 11-gauge steel at a minimum. Remember that having 40 one-inch bolts only gives 40 inches of locking contact, while a design with five one-inch bolts with a jeweler’s lug running from top to bottom can offer more support.

The Type of Lock

A combination lock is always reliable and can be low maintenance. However, they are slow to open. You want an electronic lock when you need to get your LWRC IC SPR out quickly. The drawback is that it requires a battery. Unlike a combination lock, you will not need a locksmith to change the combination for you. Biometric locks can be finicky, as a dirty finger might not open the safe. It can also be more expensive than the other options. However, it is the fastest locking mechanism. Cannon Safes also offer options for both electronic and combination locks.

Fire Rating

The biggest threat to any gun safe is a house fire. It might not even be your house that starts it, but a neighbor’s house could catch fire and spread to your home as well. Or, perhaps, the cause is natural, like a nearby lightning strike. You want a safe that is rated to withstand a 1200-degree fire for at least 30 minutes. Typically, the best safes are made with insulation like gypsum to keep your guns and other items safe.

How Much Storage Does It Offer?

The manufacturer might say the safe holds 20 long guns, but your best bet is to cut their estimate in half. The estimation does not account for bolt handles, optics, or longer guns. Unless you want to scratch your guns, it is wise to get a much larger safe than you think you need. This also allows you to expand your collection in the future. If you also plan on storing boxes of 30 30 ammo, jewelry, or important documents in the safe, all your items can take up space quickly.

Controlling Humidity

Another factor you will want to keep under control is humidity. You want some humidity if you have guns with wood stocks. In that case, it is best to place a dehumidifying rod in your safe. This requires access to an electrical outlet. If that is not possible, you will want a desiccant—a chemical that absorbs moisture. Fair warning: this option is not good for wood stocks.

Lighting Up Your Safe

Some safes come with built-in lights that are built into the ceiling. Otherwise, you will need to get aftermarket lights and install them yourself. LED light strings or lights that can stick to walls and ceilings are perfect if you do not choose a safe with built-in lights.
