8 Tools You Should Have for Maintaining and Upgrading Your Firearms

When you get a CZ 75 SP 01, you already have a great firearm. But you still might want to make upgrades to it, and you will also need to maintain it along the way. You will need the right tools to upgrade or modify your firearms, whether it is an AR 15 or a Glock. Having tools on hand can make general tasks much easier, whether you are replacing sights, ensuring a scope will stay put, or just cleaning your gun. Here are some of the items you might need.

Cleaning Kit

Your MP5K will not clean itself after a trip to the range. You will need special tools, such as a rod that will not scratch the inside of the barrel, to clean your firearms effectively. You will need cleaning swabs, lubricant, cleaner, and either a bore snake or bore rod to help clean your gun. You might also want Q-tips to help either lubricate small areas or to clean out carbon and other debris. Unsurprisingly, guns can get pretty dirty inside.

Hex Keys

Depending on the accessories you get that connect an optic or light to your Picatinny rails, you will likely need a hex key set to lock down screws. You can get a screwdriver with heads that switch out or a foldable set of hex keys similar to Allen wrenches. This will help you ensure your Redfield scopes will not come off of your rifles when you are trying to hunt.

Loctite

Loctite, as the name implies, keeps things in place. Blue Loctite is used, for example, to keep Glock sights in place, but is still removable if you want to upgrade to different sights. Red Loctite is for when you need to keep something in place on your gun, when it will not be removed, and when your gear needs to be able to handle vibrations.

Brass Hammer

A brass hammer is essential if you are hammering anything, such as pins. Brass is softer than most metals used in guns and will not mar the finish. A regular hammer can and will damage your gun, so be sure to use brass.

Punch Set

A punch set will help you get pins out of the firearm. This can help with taking down your gun for cleaning. A punch set will have multiple punches to account for different pins sizes.

Specific Takedown Tools

Your gun might require specific takedown tools. For example, Glocks usually come with a tool to aid in takedowns, and the 1911 platform often needs a bushing wrench to be field stripped. Get the right takedown tool if your gun does not come with one, or you want an easier way to take down your gun.

Gun Vise

A gun vise keeps your gun in place when you are upgrading it. It is also great for an AR 15 for deep cleaning. With a gun vise, you can protect the lower from the trigger group. The trigger group can potentially crack the lower if it is activated while the AR is open. For other guns, it simply provides a stable working space.

Maintenance Mat

A gun maintenance mat serves two purposes. It gives a soft work area to place your gun, helping you avoid scratches, and it can also soak up any cleaner or lubricant you use, protecting your workbench or table.
