Are you looking to add some fun to your summer range trips? Consider finding these cool firearms and taking them to the range. Each has something interesting or fun about them, whether it is historical, shooting multiple calibers without needing to switch barrels, or a surprising conversion that lets you shoot a 50 cal from a Glock. Here are some firearms to add spice to your summer range trips.
A Cowboy Six-Shooter: The Ruger Vaquero
The Colt Single Action Army, also called the Peacemaker, was the quintessential cowboy revolver. If you want to get in on the cowboy shooting action, try the Ruger Vaquero. It takes the aesthetics of the Peacemaker but updates the inner workings to modernize the revolver. Cowboys kept a chamber open to prevent an accidental hammer strike. With the Vaquero, this is not a problem, and you can have a full six chambers.
The 50 Cal Glock: Glock 20, 21, 40, or 41
Most shooters know about the Desert Eagle and 50 Action Express. Now imagine the surprise of your friends and fellow range goers when you pull out a Glock 20, 21, 40, or 41 with a drop-in conversion kit. Replacing the slide and barrel, Guncrafter Industries has created a conversion upper purpose-built for the company’s proprietary 50 GI round. It is slightly larger than a 45 ACP, and because it is not a magnum round like 50 AE, it has far less kick.
The 410 Revolver: The Taurus Judge
The majority of guns that shoot more than one caliber often require a conversion kit or swapping out barrels. The exception is revolvers, and the Judge pistol is among those that can fire multiple calibers with no fuss. However, unlike going from one pistol round to another, the Taurus Judge can also use 410 shot. This makes it perfect as a truck gun for the ranch, taking care of any snakes that threaten your livestock.
The AR Shotgun: Rock Island VR80
If you are looking for a full-size shotgun, you might instead go for the Rock Island VR80. This tactical shotgun takes cues from the AR-15. While it looks like an AR-pattern rifle, it is a semi-automatic shotgun, complete with a detachable magazine. Anyone familiar with the controls of an AR 15, from mag release to bolt release, will instantly be familiar with the VR80.
The Classic: M1 Garand
Finally, it is hard to go wrong with a classic. The military sells few of its firearms to the general public, but one firearm that it releases at a trickle is the M1 Garand. Made famous during WWII and the Korean War, the Garand is a semi-automatic rifle that has a distinctive ping sound when it ejects its 8-round clip. While the en bloc clip system is now obsolete due to modern magazines, the 30 06 M1 Garand is still a favorite among shooters. Just beware of the Garand thumb.
