While some trips to the shooting range are about practice and honing your skills, other trips can be a way for you and your friends to participate in some friendly competition. You know you want to take your Rock River Arms LAR 15 and use it to beat your friends in some shooting games. You have been practicing, and it is time to put those skills to good use. Next time you and your buddies go shooting, here are some challenges to try.

3 Shot Accuracy Test

Think of this as a simplified version of darts or like an archery competition. Bring circular targets that are sectioned off in smaller and smaller circles with a bullseye at the center. Set them up anywhere from 10 to 25 yards for handgun shooting. If you use rifles like a Ruger Mini 30 or Remington 700, you can put the targets 100-plus yards out. Take turns firing at the targets three times each. Assign a point value to each section on the target. Total your points at the end of the round and then go for five rounds. This is an excellent game to test accuracy and can result in some exciting and tense moments in the final round.

Multiple Target Quickness Competition

This game requires steel targets, or ones that fall or can get knocked over. Something as simple as empty soda cans would work. You just need to know when someone makes contact with the target. Line the targets up, either at varying distances or all at one distance, and then have everyone take their positions. You each shoot at the same time. The first person to hit all of their targets wins. For competitors of equal skill, it can help to have a judge stand back to watch and declare a winner. If you want to increase the competitiveness, you can turn it into a tournament consisting of one-on-one games.

Tic-Tac-Toe

For a casual game that still tests accuracy, you can play a game of tic-tac-toe. Either print off a target with a game board or create your own and set it up at your preferred distance. You and your competitor take turns firing at the target. When you hit one of the squares on the board, you claim the shot with either an X or an O. Keep track of the game by keeping a hand-drawn tic-tac-toe board next to you so you can both fill in your moves.

The Balloon Sequence Challenge

This game requires a moderator or judge who can time and call out colors. To set it up, you attach different colored balloons to your target. The more variety in colors, the more difficult the game will be. Then, you get ready to shoot. The moderator starts the timer and calls out the first color. You must pop that balloon first, and then the moderator will call out the next color. Once you pop the last balloon, the timer stops. Everyone competes for the fastest time. This is a fun, exciting game that can improve your reaction time, speed, and accuracy.
