Handgun and Long Gun Options with Low Recoil

There are a variety of reasons for seeking out firearms that produce low recoil. For kids or anyone of smaller stature, recoil can prove uncomfortable and distracting. Higher recoil can also reduce accuracy and follow-up placement. For those with physical issues or limitations, like arthritis, recoil can prove downright painful. Then there are those who simply find it unpleasant. If you are not a fan of recoil, consider the following low-recoil handgun and long gun options.

Bersa 380

Browning BAR Mark III Semi-Auto Rifle Chambered for 270 Winchester

Browning rifles have a general reputation for sturdiness, quality, and reliability. So it will come as little surprise to fans of Browning long guns that the Browning BAR Mark III is all of those things and an excellent option for reduced recoil. For hunters and long-range steel ringers, the venerable 270 Winchester is also one of the better available cartridges.

Kel-Tec CP33

An argument could certainly be made that anything chambered in 22 LR is going to feature a very mild recoil. At most, there may be a comparatively sharpish jump from the smallest 22 LR pocket pistols. The innovative Kel-Tec CP33, however, is sizable enough to render recoil virtually negligible, plus it is still lighter than you would expect. For another low-recoil Kel-Tec pistol with a bit more power, check out the Kel-Tec PMR30 chambered in 22 WMR.

Bersa Thunder 380

The Bersa Thunder 380, chambered in, appropriately, 380 ACP, has a lot going for it. Bersa successfully designed this handgun to be high-quality, high-reliability, and generally available for something like half the price of the Walther PPK it resembles. The Bersa 380 is included here for its impressively modest recoil despite being a compact pistol of largely aluminum construction.

Browning X-Bolt Chambered for 65mm Creedmoor

At this point, it seems safe to say that the 65mm Creedmoor cartridge has gone beyond flavor-of-the-week fad-cartridge status to established, proven performer. The 65mm Creedmoor can match the velocity, trajectory, and long-distance accuracy of hard-kicking magnum cartridges with significantly lower recoil. If you are looking for an incredibly high-performance cartridge in a rifle that even further tames the recoil, take a look at the 65mm Creedmoor.

Ruger LCR 9mm

While revolvers are not exactly known for a reduction of felt recoil, the Ruger LCR 9mm provides a welcome exception to that rule. It helps that the Ruger LCR is chambered for 9mm Luger rather than a more punishing cartridge like the 357 Magnum or 44 Magnum. Despite its admirably light recoil, loading the Ruger LCR 9mm with either standard velocity or reduced recoil loads is also helpful.
