How to Make the Most of Your Range Time

Whether it is lack of time or paying by the hour at an indoor range, there are plenty of reasons you might want to make the most of what range time you have. Here are some tips that can maximize your time at the range, getting more trigger time and less time setting up.

Kahr PM9

Practice Dry Firing Before you even get to the range, practice dry firing when you have free time at home. That way, when you get to the range, your form will already be better. Take out your HK P30L and, with no ammo loaded, squeeze the trigger. Rack the slide and do it again. Rinse, repeat. Why? It helps train your brain. You can get a feel for the trigger’s reset without having to actually fire the gun, and there is no “bang” that your brain will react to. This means you will not subconsciously lower the muzzle in anticipation, throwing off your aim. When you get to the range, muscle memory takes over and starts to override your brain’s anticipation of the bang. This all ends up meaning more time at the range where you will not have to try to fix your accuracy. Use a Magazine Loader Chances are, your Knights Armament AR 15 can hold between 20 and 30 rounds in a typical mag. Loading rounds is a time-consuming process, requiring you to put in every single round by hand. Enter the magazine loader, which significantly decreases the time it takes to load a magazine. Chances are, you will likely have to reload mags at the range and having one of these on hand will make it faster and easier, getting you back to shooting targets in less time. Load Your Mags Beforehand Speaking of mags, load all of your mags beforehand. This is especially handy if the range makes you pay by the hour, as all of your mags will be ready to go. Run through these mags before reloading them. If you are truly maximizing your time, you might even stop once all of your mags are empty, but this also means already having a bag full of filled mags when you get to the range. Pack Your Bag This one is simple. Make sure you have everything you need already packed—extra staples, different targets, clay pigeons, and so on. Practice the Sequence Do not just present your firearm and go through the mag. Put your Kahr PM9 in a holster, practice drawing, fire a shot, release the mag, put in another mag, present, fire, holster, repeat. Practice the entire sequence, not just firing and aiming. Slow Is Smooth and Smooth Is Fast Finally, remember to chill out and go slow. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. That means when you slow down, you are not reckless, and are less apt to make a mistake. Practicing at slow speeds means you are actually faster when you go full speed.
