While there are larger calibers available, the biggest most people will likely shoot in their lifetime is the 50 cal. There are a few different cartridges, such as the 50 GI and 50 Action Express, depending on whether you are shooting a rifle or a handgun. Here are some of the 50 cal guns you might look for if you are looking at guns online to add to your collection.

Barrett 50 Cal

The Classic: Barrett M82

When you think of a 50 cal rifle, you are probably thinking of the Barrett M82. This is the classic rifle that has been in military use since 1989. Also known by its military designation, the M107, it is essentially a range toy for anyone not in the military. The Barrett 50 cal is sure to turn heads at the range, though, as it is loud, powerful, and likely to destroy just about any target you are shooting at. This makes it less than ideal for hunting. It is also heavy, clocking in at 33 pounds, and even with that weight, the recoil is extremely heavy. Two types of muzzle brakes are available to help mitigate this beast of a rifle. There is also the M107A1, or “Light Fifty,” which is a few pounds lighter.

The Bullpup: Barrett M95 or XM500

Barrett also makes bullpup 50 cal rifles, the bolt-action M95, and the semi-automatic XM500. The XM500 is based on the M82 but is lighter and more compact. It also has a stationary barrel, while the M82 has a recoiling-barrel design, lending it more accuracy.

The AR: AR 15 Chambered in 50 Beowulf

Would you rather use an AR-pattern rifle? The common rifle type can be found chambered in a 50 cal variant, 50 Beowulf. It is similar to the 500 S&W Magnum cartridge, sized to match the rim of a 6.5mm Grendel. Ballistics are roughly equal to early 45 70 Government rounds. While generally thought of as a range toy round, it is gaining popularity for hunting larger game, from deer to moose and bear.

The Famous Handgun: Desert Eagle

One of the most famous handguns on the market, the Desert Eagle, can be chambered in 50 Action Express, the basis for 50 Beowulf. It is well-known in popular culture, from video games to films. It is not terribly reliable, but it is fun to shoot at the range. It is not practical for much else and, despite being heavy, has considerable recoil for a handgun.

The Glock: Glock 20/21

Guncrafter Industries created the 50 GI as a handgun round and handcrafted drop-in kits to replace the slide and barrel of Gen 1-4 Glocks 20, 21, 40, and 41. Because it is not a magnum round like 50AE, it has far less pressure and thus less recoil. If you really want to hunt with a Glock or impress friends at the range, this surprising round might be what you are looking for.
