Something a prospective new gun owner looking for an AR 15 for sale may not consider is that they will also need to procure cleaning supplies. Cleaning copper, dirt, and other fouling is vital in keeping the bolt moving and the gun accurate. Here are the essentials you will need to clean your firearm and make sure it is running smoothly.

A Cleaning Rod That Won’t Scratch

One of the best ways to clean a firearm is with a cleaning rod. This helps you clean out the barrel of your firearm. However, shoving just any rod down your Ruger Mini 30 is likely to scratch or ding the inside of the barrel, permanently decreasing accuracy. You want a rod made out of a material that is softer than the barrel’s steel. Typically, this is brass. You can find carbon fiber rods, as well. They often come in segments so you can adjust to the length of your firearm.

Jags or Loops to Hold Patches

Jags and loops are what go on the end of the cleaning rod and hold patches. Jags punch through a patch to hold it in place, while patches can be folded into the loop, much like threading a sewing needle. Like the rod, you will want something softer than steel, such as brass or plastic.

Patches to Wipe and Apply Solvent

Having a stack of clean patches when you clean a firearm is essential. Every time you pass the cleaning rod through the bore, you need a new patch. Patches coated in solvent will help loosen any powder or fouling left from shooting. Cotton patches can be found in bulk, and they are perfect for wiping down other parts of the gun, as well. Need to wipe down the inside of the slide on your HK USP? Use a patch. Did you just need a bit of oil on your rifle bolt? Use a patch.

Bronze or Nylon Brushes for After Patches

After using patches, you want bronze or nylon brushes. Bronze will work better if you have shot more through your gun since its last cleaning. Get the right size for your bore and attach it to the end of the cleaning rod.

Cleaning Chemicals and Lubricant to Keep the Gun Working

There are a variety of cleaning chemicals available. Solvents will help remove carbon, lead, and other fouling from the bore, while degreaser removes dirt and oil from moving parts. Lubricant keeps parts moving and protects against rust. Copper remover specifically removes copper. Protectant is for guns that will face harsh, wet environments, such as when backcountry hunting.

Utility Brushes for Small Areas

A utility brush fills the same role as an old toothbrush, getting into nooks and crannies. It’s ideal for slide grooves and trigger assemblies. Nylon bristles are for general use, while brass can remove carbon.

Q-Tips for More Delicate Work

Having a supply of Q-tips helps you get to areas patches cannot and will help clean out fouling and apply chemicals. They are excellent for cleaning bolt lugs on rifles, for example.

Bore Snakes for Lighter Cleaning

For lighter cleaning, invest in a bore snake. These have bristles and are made of cloth, perfect for adding chemicals. Run it through the bore a few times, and it will be cleaned and lubricated.
