The Wonder Nines: Setting the Standard for Handgun Excellence

The 9mm cartridge is one of the most popular centerfire handgun cartridges. It is the handgun cartridge of choice for militaries, police forces, and civilian gun enthusiasts. Its proponents insist that it is the perfect combination of an effective cartridge offering impressive performance while not being overpowered. However, the 9mm was truly solidified as the cartridge to rule them all with the introduction of the “Wonder Nines.” The Wonder Nines are 9mm handguns with high-capacity, double-stacked magazines, and a double-action trigger (at least, double-action for the first shot). While the first of the Wonder Nines was introduced nearly a century ago, models like the Browning Hi-Power, CZ 75, and SIG P226 remain as popular as ever.
The Browning Hi Power
The Browning Hi Power is the granddaddy of Wonder Nines, the standard-setter against which all others are judged. As the name suggests, the Browning Hi-Power was the brainchild of perhaps the greatest firearms engineer and innovator in modern history, John Moses Browning. After Browning’s death, the design was completed by Dieudonné Saive, a firearms designer with FN Herstal. The name Hi Power alludes to the original double-stacked magazine capacity of 13 rounds, nearly twice the capacity of other 9mm pistols on the market at the time. It is not just the first of its kind. The Hi Power is also an incredibly well-designed gun. The fact that it has been in continuous military service from 1935 to this day speaks to that fact.
The CZ 75
Since its invention in 1975, the CZ 75 has become one of the world’s most famous, most reliable, and most used pistol families. Much of the CZ 75’s acclaim is based on its exceptionally solid, sound, and reliable all-steel construction. Including a wide selection of variants, like the tactical CZ 75 SP 01, the CZ 75 is popular with users and in service with police forces and militaries around the world because it is such an eminently trustworthy pistol. However, its engineering is so impressive that professional shooters have used this all-steel Czech pistol to win multiple IPSC World Championship shooting competitions.
The Glock 17
On the other side of the fabrication spectrum than the all-steel CZ 75 is the lightweight polymer-based Wonder Nine, the Glock. When the Glock 17 was first released, users were skeptical of its light polymer construction. Many initially dismissed it as a “plastic gun,” too flimsy to be relied on. Glocks are now owned by millions, are the most used police pistol in the U.S., and the name is a byword for toughness and reliability in the harshest conditions. As a lightweight, always-reliable, high-capacity handgun, the Glock has inspired a generation of new Wonder Nines.
