Whether you are hunting or going to a competition, being able to shoot faster while maintaining accuracy is essential. It could be the follow-up shot that lands you the deer, or it could be the difference between first and second place. Here are some tips and drills to help you shoot faster without sacrificing accuracy.

Beretta ARX 160

Have a Solid Base of Fundamentals No matter if you are using a Glock, a Beretta ARX 160, an AR 15, or a bolt-action Browning, you need to start with a solid base of fundamentals. That means stance, grip, sight picture, and follow-through. Practice makes perfect on these, and not having a solid grasp of these concepts and how to practice them means you will never get faster. For example, if you cannot properly squeeze the trigger, your aim could be thrown off. If you anticipate the loud bang, you might subconsciously point the muzzle slightly down to compensate, throwing off your aim. If you do not have the proper grip and stance, firing quickly could push your body back, making it dangerous to continue firing. Go to the range and practice, and take classes from professionals to help you start right. Dry Fire Whenever You Can There is another way you can train your brain on how to pull the trigger and proper follow-through, and it can be done in your house. Dry firing just requires your firearm and some time. With no mags in or an empty mag, pull the trigger, cycle the action, slowly release the trigger until you feel the reset, and squeeze the trigger again. This helps train your brain against compensating for the bang and gives you a feel for where the reset is for the follow-up shot. Practicing this now will help you later when you live-fire. Rhythm and Cadence Firing quickly is like a dance and requires a rhythm. You can practice this cadence by firing a single shot and pausing. Next, fire two shots, one every second. Continue up to five shots, and then go backwards to one shot. This can help you understand your trigger reset better, and starting slow means going faster later. The key here is timing and knowing your trigger reset length. Slow Is Smooth, and Smooth Is Fast The old adage “slow is smooth, smooth is fast” works very well here. Whether it is cycling the action on bolt-action Browning rifles or practicing a draw, firing a shot, releasing the mag, reloading, and firing four shots, you want to start slow. Consciously trying to go fast can make you reckless. Trying to cycle a bolt-action rifle quickly can make you slower. Trying to reload too fast could mean you drop the mag as you draw it from your belt or chest rig. Practice slower at first, speeding up over time. Because you know what you are doing when you go slowly, as you continually speed up, you build the skills and muscle memory as a foundation for going faster. Soon, you will naturally go faster.
