What Type of Helmet Do You Need at the Range?

Whether you are heading to the range for plinking with a 22, practicing hunting with Remington shotguns, or training for competition with a highly modified AR 15, you might want to wear a tactical helmet. Most tactical helmets can help protect your head from ricochets, falls, and other injuries. You can also mount night vision goggles, an action camera, ear protection, and other accessories on the helmet. Which helmet is right for you? Here are some of the options you can choose from to help you decide.

The Old School PASGT

The Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops saw service from the early 1980s to the mid-2000s. It was made using Kevlar fibers, plus it offers a lip over the helmet brow. It is still in use but not standard. Some PASGTs still use the original fiber technology, while others have been upgraded with combat pads and fibers. If you are just plinking around the range, you might want one of these helmets.

The MICH and ACH Helmets

The Modular Integrated Communications Helmet replaced the PASGT, and the Advanced Combat Helmet was the upgrade to the MICH. These are still in use around the world. Both the MICH and ACH are typically low-cut helmets, covering your ears. This can mean additional weight but provides extra protection. They usually feature memory foam for a comfortable and secure fit.

Upgrading to the ECH

The ECH is the upgraded version of the MICH and ACH. It uses ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. This makes it lighter than the ACH and MICH while providing better protection from rifle rounds and fragmentation. If you do not need to mount accessories, this is an excellent choice for the range.

The FAST Helmet

Are you training for a competition? Do you want to mount an action camera on your helmet so you can evaluate every run with your CZ 75 SP 01 to get better results next time? Then you want a Future Assault Shell Technology helmet. You sacrifice protection in favor of carrying accessories, such as ear protection or night vision goggles. If you are in the military, you might have this and want to train how you will serve as it will help you get used to the weight.

The Bump Helmet

If you were looking for pistols for sale and just wanted something to protect your head from bumps, you want a bump helmet. These are not rated for ballistics, so ricochets from your new pistol are still dangerous, but they will protect your head if you fall down. It is also great for mounting cameras or NVGs, as it is also lightweight. These are alternatives to the FAST helmet without ballistic protection.
